Good wine, like good architecture, is an expression of place. Nga Waka’s award-winning wine is now enjoyed all over the world, yet its roots in rural Wairarapa haven’t been forgotten.

At the centre of our master planning design for the Martinborough vineyard was the iconic Kiwi shed. The 2003 NZIA Awards Jury observed: “A careful composition of volumes and elements combined with the expressive articulation of structural components has taken the humble New Zealand shed to a new level”.

Our design of the Nga Waka complex including a winery, dry store, equipment shed, and wine-maker’s office was a response to the surrounding Wairarapa landscape with low gabion walls and pebble gardens echoing the nearby riverbeds.
